Best Sausage Rolls

Air fryer sausage rolls recipe – a 4-ingredient savoury treat that takes less than 30 minutes to make! Gluten-free and Coeliac-friendly.

Air fryer sausage rolls recipe, anyone? They come out even better than in the oven as the dry environment of the air fryer ensures there’s no soggy pastry! Best of all, you can easily make this in just 30 minutes.

Air fryer sausage rolls recipe: What you’ll need…

  • Gluten-free puff pastry: I used gluten-free Jus-Rol pastry for this recipe which you can find in chilled free from sections in Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsburys.
  • Gluten-free sausages: Any sausages will do as long as they’re gluten-free – you could also used pork mince seasoned with a little salt and pepper too.
  • Wholegrain mustard: You won’t find this in your bog-standard sausage roll, but a little of this makes all the difference in terms of flavour impact.
  • Egg: This is just for egg-washing the pastry, so a small, medium or large egg will do here.

So, what does it taste like? Like a proper sausage roll! Gluten-free puff pastry doesn’t puff up so dramatically as you might remember gluten-pastry performing.

However, it still offers a golden, crisp and light finish that goes down a treat with a dash of wholegrain mustard and tender sausage meat.

In my experience, the gluten-free puff pastry comes out really well in an air fryer; the quick blast of heat seems to crisp up the outside even more, allowing for even more flakiness and crunch.

But don’t take my word for it – you need to try it for yourself! Here’s a few frequently asked questions before we get started…

Air fryer sausage rolls recipe: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this recipe gluten-free? Is it suitable for Coeliacs?

It is gluten-free, though nobody would know just by tasting it – trust me!

Bear in mind that minimising cross-contamination is hugely important if you’re Coeliac or making this for someone who is.

Also, make sure that all ingredients or products used don’t have any gluten-containing ingredients. Then make sure that they also don’t have a ‘may contain’ warning for gluten, wheat, rye, barley, oats (which aren’t gf), spelt and khorasan wheat (aka Kamut).

Can I make your air fryer sausage rolls recipe dairy-free?

Since JusRol gluten-free pastry is also dairy-free, this recipe is totally dairy-free too!

Can I make your air fryer sausage rolls recipe vegan or vegetarian?

With a good gluten-free, meat-free mince as a replacement for the sausage meat, this recipe could easily be made veggie or vegan. However, I’d recommend seasoning well with salt, pepper, smoked paprika and a little cumin if doing so.

Is this recipe low FODMAP?

As long as your sausages are low FODMAP and the puff pastry you’re using is too, then your finished result will be low FODMAP and safe for the elimination phase of the diet.

If you’re not sure if your pastry is low FODMAP or not, it’s best to wait until the reintroduction phase of the diet to try these.

Where can I buy gluten-free Jus-Rol puff pastry?

You can buy it in Tesco, Waitrose and Sainsburys in the chilled free from sections.

Air fryer sausage rolls recipe: Tips for the perfect bake every time

  1. Allow the puff pastry to rest at room temperature before using. If it’s too cold, it can be very brittle and break easily when unrolled.
  2. Use the baking paper the pastry was rolled in to work on. It’s proper non-stick baking parchment, so why not make good use of it?
  3. Ensure the pastry is on a solid work surface or board when cutting. You need to use a sharp knife to cut the pastry, so ensure you don’t scratch the surface underneath!
  4. Allow to rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. This isn’t just so you don’t burn your mouth! Letting meat rest stops all the juices from immediately running out when you bite it, which would make the pastry soggy.

Air Fryer Sausage Rolls Recipe

Air fryer sausage rolls recipe – a 4-ingredient savoury treat that takes less than 30 minutes to make! Gluten-free and Coeliac-friendly.

Ingredients

  • 280 g gluten-free puff pastry (one pack)
  • 400 g sausages (ensure gluten-free)
  • 3 tbsp wholegrain mustard
  • 1 egg (beaten)

Instructions

  • Remove sausages from their skins and mash together in a bowl until no longer lumpy.
  • Unroll the puff pastry and cut in half lengthways so you’re left with two long strips
  • Spread a long line off mustard, just off centre along each of the strips, then top with a line of the sausage meat.
  • Brush beaten egg along the slightly thinner edge and then fold the pastry over and seal using a fork.
  • Brush the top of the pastry with beaten egg and cut slashes down it using a sharp knife. Repeat the last few steps for the other strip of pastry and the rest of your sausage meat.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut the sausage rolls to the size you’d like / what fits in your air fryer basket – I made 4 big ones!
  • Place in the air fryer at 200C for 12-14 minutes until golden, crisp and cooked through. (If you need to preheat your air fryer then ensure you do – some do, some don’t!)
  • Remove from the air fryer, allow to rest for 5-10 minutes, then enjoy!
